Things to know about your lashes before booking any lash services and our lash cycles!
We each have 300-500 lashes and we have 3 different lash shedding stages. Because of this during a lash lift and tint one eye may look and appear to be longer than the other. This is normal because each eye is on a different lash shed cycle! Eye lashes are sisters not twins.
Many variables can impact the growth of natural eyelashes. From environmental to medical, lashes can shed prematurely at various stages of the growth cycle.
HORMONES: Hormones play a huge roll on premature eyelash loss or even cause the growth cycle to last longer. Birth control, menopause (age), pregnancy and
treatment like IVF can strengthen or weaken eyelashes.
THYROID ABNORMALITIES: The thyroid hormone influences the activity of all cells in humans. It is therefore not unexpected that hair follicle activity is affected by
hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism causes hair to become dull, brittle, and coarse with a reduced diameter as well as areas with hair loss. Hyperthyroidism
can cause hair to break off and to become shorter; it can also cause Alopecia.
MEDICATIONS: Many medications like anti-epileptic, anti-anxiety/depressants can impact eyelash growth cycles and cause premature fallout. Most cancer treatments
and medications also impact hair growth. Once treatment is discontinued, it is likely the normal lash cycle will resume.
SPRING, FALL AND WINTER SEASONAL SHEDDING: Yes, you heard that right all hair including lashes shed seasonally as the weather changes. As the seasons change your lashes change and you will experience all lengths and stages
of growth during this period which takes on average 6 weeks for the lash growth cycle to return to normal.
LASH SHEDDING: Lash growth cycles are affected by many factors, and changes in those can trigger a change in the lash growth cycle. The most significant annual shift
in lash growth cycles is spring/fall/winter lash shedding, which has been subjected to many lash industry discussions. When we enter the cold season, there is not as much sun as in
the summer, so vitamin D levels drop significantly in our bodies. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to hair loss as sunlight is the primary determinant of our bodies’ vitamin D
status.
This is much more noticeable in areas where the changes in seasons are more significant, so the latitude where you live plays a big part in whether you are likely to
encounter these seasonal changes or not. This is very important to remember because if you live in an area with lots of Sun throughout the year you are not likely to notice
a significant change in your lash cycle. If you look at the location of lash artists who argue against seasonal shedding, you will see that the majority live in sunny
areas. Since they haven’t encountered these changes, they believe that it does not exist. It does not affect everyone, though, and researchers will do more studies on hair
growth and shedding. When you start Googling the subject, you will find that usually, “more research is needed” is said about this matter. It does NOT mean that these
seasonal changes are a hoax; it just means that researchers find that they need to do more studies on this to confirm their findings. Doing studies on women is very expensive
due to their hormonal changes, so usually, men are preferred for these studies.
EXTREME HEAT: Extreme heat, like heat waves and the sudden change from a cool climate to a hot climate can cause eyelashes to grow at a rapid rate. During heatwaves
it is estimated that hair and eyelash growth cycles speed up as much as two weeks.
STRESS & IMPULSE DISORDERS: Environmental stressors like exams, breakups, deaths in families and being overworked call all lead to premature lash loss. Also impulse
disorders like Trichotillomania, where someone has a constant urge to pull at their eyelashes and eyebrows can cause caps in hair growth along with bald spots. Trichotillomania
can be treated and people can go into remission.
I understand that lashes shed daily and it is normal to shed 3-5 lashes a day and JRO Artistry is not liable for lash shedding
